Szeged, Hungary, 31. May 2007

The city Szeged was chosen as location for a truck stop due to its vibrating youth life and openness which is well-known. The programme started at 13.00, at Széchenyi-square. The moderators, Klausz Karola and the Grenadian MC Kemon greeted the audience and briefly made them familiar to the programme.

The truck tour’s main goal is to encourage people to become a part of the campaign. Thus, parallel with the programs, everyone had the chance to write in the guest book at the information desk, to tell in front of a camera what he/she thinks about discrimination or to get photographed at the photo wall.

In the „Test your senses!” game everyone could try how it fells if you lack one of your senses: participants had to put their hands in a box and guess what was in it, using only their hands. The other part of the game was smelling things, players had to identify different smells. They could test their ears as well; they had to recognize 9 different noises (train, bicycle bell etc.). The game was very popular the whole day; participants won anti-discrimination T-shirts, pens, posters and pins.

MC Kemon – entertaining the crowd with funny rhymes and melodious songs- introduced the Mobil Ability Park which is a wheelchair track. The MC was very surprised, when a real disabled called him out to a race. „Surprisingly”, Kemon did not win the race, but the audience clapped their hands for him as well. The park was open until the end of the day.

There were many activites on the stage as well; the first was a sign language workshop, held by Antal Alexandra, a professional sign-interpreter. Alexa showed the audience basic moves, which they could practice. Do you know how the deaf clap their hands? They wave towards the sky.

The workshop was followed by a quiz game. 2 teams competed against each other; they had to answer questions about the EU, anti-discrimination and diversity. They had to complete the Mobil Ability Park and the „Test your senses!” game too. The male team won the game; all three members were given free tickets to Szeged Youth Festival.

After the quiz, the most moving programme part started: the mentally retarded Sunbeam Group’s performance. They performed a majorette show, folk songs and a disco dance. A boy member sang a Hungarian song twice, because the audience wanted to hear it again. Furthermore, the 1994 Academy Award winning short movie „The black rider” was screened on the truck. After the movie Lőrincz Marcell, leader of the Subjective Values Found, held an anti-discrimination training. All volunteers got a role card (homeless gipsy, son of a banker, etc.), and they had to answer questions according to their roles. After the role-play all participants exchanged their opinions, everyone was eager to talk.

The Truck Idol karaoke contest followed, guided by MC Kemon. All contestants had to choose songs dealing with anti-discrimination or diversity. The winners were chosen by the audience. Two girls, singing „Africa” by KFT and „I’m just a girl” by No Doubt, won the race. Both of them received an IPod.

The concert of a local band, Honey Bee, highlighted the end of the programme.

Sliema, Malta, 15. June 2007

The Diversity Truck, which tours the European Union member states, made its second Malta stop in two years on Friday, June 15 and with it, the Sliema promenade was alive with entertainment and, above all else, the message of diversity and combating discrimination on the grounds of racial or ethnic origin, religion, age, disability, sexual orientation and gender equality was spread out.

To have the Diversity Truck in Sliema at the promenade was indeed the right choice. The venue has a beautiful panorama and a lot of people enjoyed to be around the Truck. Discrimination is in 2007 still an important topic and the people were not only paying their attention to the singers and performers but as well to the invited guests who spoke about discrimination and diversity. During the evening event the mood of the people was raising and had it’s peak in the karaoke. Especially young people were participating and cheering.

On the stage of the Diversity Truck, singer Miriam Christine (who is also one of the Diversity Ambassadors of Malta) and XFM’s Jason Zammit hosted the show which included acts such as Chiaran Siracusa, Klinsmann Coleiro and the band The Quacks.

Chiara Siracusa is famous for representing Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1998 and again in 2005. Klinsmann Coleiro is only 16 years old and can be considered as one of the future prospects in Maltese music circles. His music style is soft rock and especially young girls like him a lot. The Quacks were playing live on stage. They entertained the people with music which everybody likes. The singer Miriam Christine who was the presenter of the show was singing as well. In total there was multifaceted mixture of singers entertaining the people.

As special highlight of the event was the performance of the Wheelchair Dancers. They have international success at European tournaments and at that evening they showed the crowd how moving people in wheelchairs are.

Prizes, including three iPods and tickets to the Bryan Adamas concert, were also handed out to winners of the karaoke contest and quiz.

Guest speakers, highlighting the issues addressed by the campaign included Epifanio Vella from the Federation of Organisations for Persons with Disability, David Herrera, President of the Kunsill Studenti Universitarji, Gabi Calleja and Colette Farrugia Bennett from the Malta Gay Rights Movement and Hanan El Khatib, Vice Chairman of the National Implementation Body of the European Year of Equal Opportunities for All.

The aim of spreading out information about discrimination and organisations involved in these matters is fulfilled. But of course one must also be aware of the fact that the situation in Malta is extremely difficult regarding refugees. The idea of having a band of refugees playing drums had to be dismissed as it would have been too dangerous for them.

This shows that the work of the European Commission is very important. The Truck Tour brought the peoples mind to realise that there is more than the known stereotypes. The idea of diversity was communicated in words and as well in the heterogeneous mixture of different musicians on the stage.

THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION TRUCK TOUR ARRIVES TO PUERTA DEL SOL IN MADRID

The European Commission Anti-Discrimination Truck was located in Puerta del Sol, in the very heart of Madrid, coinciding with EUROPRIDE 2007 celebrations, from 29th to 30th June.

Its main goal was to inform citizens about Community legislation as regards anti discrimination and to spread the benefits of diversity and equity of opportunities for all citizens.

Estrella Rodríguez, General Director of Immigrants Integration, Tomás Jiménez, representative of the European Commission Office in Madrid, and Toni Poveda, President of the Spanish Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Transexuals and Bisexuals attended the introductory event.

According to Estrella Rodríguez, “guarantees of equal opportunities are directly linked to citizen rights”, and that is the reason why the Spanish Government has supported the EU yellow truck visit to Spain.

During its stay in Madrid, the truck housed different activities such as life music, karaoke and storytelling, and informative material was distributed.

„EU Diversity Truck“ in Luxemburg

Liverpool, United Kingdom, 24./25 July 07

The UK Truck stops, organised in co-operation with both the Diversity and Social Inclusion Team and Youth Service of Liverpool City Council, attracted a very large and varied audience on both days. Roughly two thirds of the audience came from the general public and local community groups and stakeholders who had seen and heard the Truck Tour promoted in local press. The other third were made up of passers-by, the majority of which were young people.

The programme for the two days was evenly split between entertainment and awareness-raising activities. Four workshops were held during the two days of the Truck Tour in the local Job Centre Plus offices in Williamson Square:

  • "Discrimination at school, at work, in life" - hosted by Jo Anne Brown (DA for the EYEO) for teenagers
  • "The business case for diversity" – hosted by Joel O’Loughlin (DA for the EYEO) for SME employers
  • "Recognising and managing harassment in the workplace: a workshop for employees" – hosted by Bill Majrowski (Face of the Year for the EYEO)
  • "Diversity poetry" – hosted by David Neita (Face of the Year for the EYEO)

Each workshop was attended by 12 people (eight pre-registered and four signed up on the day). This was the maximum number allowed by Job Centre Plus for health and safety reasons. Initial feedback from both the hosts and participants has been very positive.

We also welcomed representatives from Age Positive and SALTO-Youth, both of whom are National Working Group members in the UK. They helped to promote the Truck Tour, hosted information stands, and responded to questions from the general public during both days.

The information stand, giveaways, guestbook and games were set-up immediately adjacent to the Truck and proved very popular with the general public. Much advice was given from the information stand on personal discrimination issues and all visitors to the Truck were encouraged to take away information material and giveaways about the campaign.

The entertainment on the Truck was very well received, with a good mixture of activities that drew people to the event from the surrounding area. The majority of the performance acts were provided by Brouhaha International Festival. In keeping with the theme of diversity, the acts were chosen for their varied backgrounds and performances. They included: Eclodir Azul (Portuguese drummers); Theatre Artmask (Ukrainian street theatre); Young Kof (Liverpool-based Hip-Hop artist); Vamos (Uruguayan dancers); Urbeats High Def Showcase (selection of Liverpool-based Hip-Hop artists); Roots and Routes (German B-Bop dancers); Three Hours Theatre (Polish street theatre).

The highlight of the entertainment programme was the ‘Diversity Idol’ karaoke competition that we extended by one hour on both days to meet public demand.

In summary, the Truck Tour went extremely well, encouraging the local community to engage with the message of the campaign in an interesting and educational environment. The central location meant that the Truck attracted a large cross-section of Liverpool’s community in addition to those that had heard about the Truck Tour before it arrived in Liverpool.

Saarbrücken, Germany, 29. July 2007

On 29 July 2007 diversity was celebrated in Saarbrücken: Parallel to the Christopher Street Day (CSD), the gay and lesbian festival also known as Gay Pride, about a thousand citizens visited the truck in front of the historical Bergwerksdirektion site. They learned about how the EU directives protect each and every one of them from discrimination.

The truck stop was opened by a discussion round with the press on the stage. Journalists spoke with politicians, experts and victims of discrimination from Saarbrücken and the surrounding area. After the press event, radio presenter Christian Balser launched the entertainment and information programme with live music and interactive tools, which made diversity a real experience. One highlight was the comedy show performed by cabaret artist Alice Hoffmann: in her role as Vanessa Backes, she broached the issue of discrimination and homosexuality in her very own entertaining way. Samba rhythm announced the opening of the CSD programme on the truck stage, and the parade of 24 wagons began their trail throughout the city, passing 6.000 onlookers.

SZIGET FESTIVAL

The 2nd Hungarian stop of the EU Truck Tour took place at Sziget Festival. The program had two parallel locations: at the truck, islanders could play the „Test your senses” game and be part of the campaign (photo or personal message). Copenhagen, Denmark, 15. August 2007

EU’s mangfoldigheds-truck indtog Danmark i august.

Senere indtog Mikkel Lund scenen med sit show ”Crooner i kørestol”.

In August the EU Diversity Truck had two stops in Denmark. The first stop was in the Town Hall Square in Copenhagen on 15 August – the day that many schools started up again after their summer break. In the morning The Minister for Equality Eva Kjer Hansen had visited a school in Copenhagen to launch the interactive role play “Mars: The Spirit of Humanity” and to appoint the students equality ambassadors. When school was over the students all went to the Town Hall Square to experience the different activities on the truck.

Here, the Documentation Centre against Race Discrimination presented their report on Discrimination in Copenhagen and hosted a panel discussion with experts and local politicians. Later “Crooner in a wheelchair” Mikkel Lund took over the stage, followed by the popular Danish rapper Ataf.

Copenhagen mayor Ritt Bjerregaard welcomed the truck to Copenhagen stating that diversity is high on the agenda in the Danish capital. This was underlined when she took the opportunity to vawe the Rainbow flag together with young activists from the Gay and Lesbian Association as a comment to the incident in Vilnius where the Rainbow flag was not allowed on the truck.

The day ended with an invitation to "Beat a homo – in dart or super Mikado".

After the award ceremony, MC Sinaya performed hip-hop and break-dance before “The Butlers” took the stage for the last gig of the day.
